Presenting Aspects of Jewish Life
Aspects of Jewish Life in Unterlindau Synagogue 1893 till 1938
An exhibition from May 30 to July 24, 2025, at the BIMU by young people in cooperation with the Evangelical Reformed Church Frankfurt and the Jewish Community of Frankfurt. Young people from two Presbyterian parishes in Frankfurt, the Evangelical Reformed Church and the French Reformed Church, explored in confirmation class a nearly forgotten place and are presenting their findings in drawings, reconstructions, and virtual models. The exhibition showcases the young people’s works, whether made from building blocks, modeling clay, pencil drawings, or even architectural software. The Unterlindau Synagogue can be seen in a reconstruction in the “Minecraft” world as a film. The results were presented on November 10, 2024, and were on display from May 11-25, 2025, at the Jewish Community of Frankfurt, Savignystrasse.
Some years after Jews were allowed to live outside of Frankfurt’s Judengasse (Jewish Quarter), a 270-seat synagogue was built in 1893 at Unterlindau 23 in the Westend district, near a Yeshiva. It reflected Frankfurt’s rich Jewish life, with many well-known names such as Jakob Horovitz, Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, Erich Fromm, and others. In 1938, the synagogue was attacked by Nazis, and its interior was vandalized. The building got destroyed in an air raid in 1944. Since 1988 there is a memorial on site in Unterlindau 23.
